Fifth Grade Newsletter- March 2026
Literacy- In HMH Module 5, students will build their knowledge about our planet, with a focus on the persuasive text genre. We will read texts and view
videos about different things people do to care for the Earth and its living
things. During this time students will also use close reading strategies to build
comprehension and respond to literature.
Social Studies- During this unit students will explore the Western Hemisphere. As they learn about the different areas in this region, they will understand how geography, government and culture affect the life styles of the people in the community.
Science- In the Amplify, students will continue the unit "The Earth System." Students are exploring how mixing substances can create brand‑new materials through chemical reactions. By choosing which substances to combine, engineers can control the results of a chemical reaction. The students will learn about how people can use science to protect Earth’s resources and care for our planet.
Math- This month students will begin Module 5: Addition and Multiplication with Volume and Area. Students begin by reasoning about and working with
three-dimensional shapes. They explore cubic units and move toward calculations of volumes of rectangular prisms. Students also extend their two-dimensional work with area to figures with fractional side lengths.
